Mortenson Broadcasting Company History

Mortenson Broadcasting Company

Mortenson Broadcasting Company has owned and operated over 40 radio stations throughout the United States since it began operations. MBC was founded with the mission statement of “Helping to make and keep the home sacred.” The success of MBC’s first station, WTOF in Canton, Ohio, led to further acquisitions in major markets across the United States. Several of the markets in which MBC has served the public include Baltimore, Washington D. C., Denver, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Akron, Kansas City, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Phoenix and Nashville, Albuquerque, Lexington, Huntington, Charleston, Raleigh, Cleveland, etc. Many of these markets have been served by a cluster of MBC stations.

Mortenson Broadcasting Company began with the vision of Jack M. Mortenson, and his late father, Dr. E. M. Mortenson. After several very successful joint ventures, including the start-up and pastorship of Faith Memorial Baptist Church in Canton, Ohio, Jack re-directed his career to focus exclusively on the development of his network of Christian radio stations after the death of his father in 1970. As one of the early pioneers in the development of Christian radio broadcasting, Jack methodically built and expanded MBC into being the successful Christian radio broadcasting network that it is today. As the years have passed and with the progress of new technology, MBC began to make the transition from general Christian formats to formats directed to specifically targeted audiences. These specialized formats have included Christian teaching and preaching, Christian talk, Contemporary Christian music, Southern gospel music, Urban Christian talk, Urban Gospel, and Hispanic, which is the latest and fastest growing targeted Christian audience. Most of these stations also offer exclusive regional high school and college sports coverage. Some of the highlights of MBC’s history include the planning, implementation and development of several of the most successful Black Gospel stations in the nation. In recent years, MBC has also led the way in starting some of the first full-time Christian Spanish speaking stations in the U. S!

All MBC stations are commercially operated and do not solicit or accept donations from listeners. MBC does encourage its listeners, however, to support its broadcasters and patronize its commercial advertisers. Listeners who financially support our clients are also supporting our efforts in spreading the gospel throughout the United States.

MBC’s corporate offices are located in Lexington, Kentucky. Its current largest group of stations is located within the Dallas-Ft. Worth market, which is the 5th largest market in the United States. Mr. Mortenson and his staff are extremely excited about the vast potential and various opportunities that exist not only there, but in the other MBC markets, as well. We continue to search for new ways to reach out to help those in need. Today, MBC’s sole mission is still to further the cause of Christ in every market in which it serves. As Mr. Mortenson recently stated, “I am grateful for the hundreds of employees who have made the commitment to work daily to help us fulfill our mission—‘Helping to make and keep the home sacred.’”
